Lasang Pinoy - Lambanog

This will be my first post joining Lasang Pinoy which is in it’s 24th edition. For those who don’t know, it’s a monthly blogging event where a different ingredient is highlighted and for this month it’s coconut. This month is hosted by Kai from Bucaio. I’m quite late in entering this but I suppose I’m just doing it on Filipino time ;).

I decided to do something different and highlight a drink instead of a dish. Lambanog is made from the sap of the coconut flower. This drink is known to be quite strong. This was even featured in the show Three sheets in the Mojo channel. Pretty Cool!
I got my bottle from when my Uncle went to the Philippines and I asked for one. It’s not readily available in any store that I know of here in the Northeast. The brand that I got is Orgy (I guess things happen after you drink it?). It’s 95 proof!!! That’s fire baby! A Johnnie Walker Whisky or Grey Goose vodka is only 80 proof. Lambanog is usually called coconut vodka. It doesn’t quite taste the same as vodka. It has a little a little bit of sweetness to it. It is usually drank straight up in shots where you definitely feel the heat come through you throat and down you stomach.
I decided to make something different and mix it in with some guava juice. The outcome is quite a refreshing drink. You can definitely treat lambanog like a vodka when making cocktails and I will be making some tropical flavor martinis soon. But for now I’ll enjoy the Lambanog with guava juice!

Hi I love this drink, although I’m not much of a drinker. I’ll tell my husband to bring a bottle or two of the lambanog. Where can he get one? Thanks and this is a great LP entry.:)

[…] Food recipes using coconut were the main thing, but what caught my eyes was the drink - “lambanog with guava juice“. […]

I think SM or Robinsons supermarkets should have that brand. Enjoy!

95 proof?! haven’t seen that in the supermarket lately… or is it the brand name that’s keeping me away from it.

I just brought a couple bottles of Lanbanog while I was in the Philippines. I am fairly sure I saw this at the Walter Mart in Makati. There are also “collectible” bottles (w/ straw packaging) in the Balikbayan section at the Landmark, and they come in many different flavors (bubblegum, mint, red apple, etc). I wasn’t sure how I should drink it so now I have a couple ideas…Thanks!
